Research Institute Of Swahili Studies Of Eastern Africa (RISS-EA)

The Research Institute of Swahili Studies of Eastern Africa is an international, non-profit institute centrally based in Mombasa, but with a campus in Lamu and a regional office in Nairobi. RISS-EA/TUSIMA staff work in Swahili and English, primarily with local and international students and reseachers, but also with other groups such as diplomats and UN staff, and people working for governments and public service institutions. The institute falls under the jurisdiction of National Museums of Kenya. Teaching is through illustrated lectures, discussion sessions and group seminars. Students on the programme also have the opportunity to spend time living with a Swahili family and/or within Swahili people's environment.

What does the programme involve? 

  •   Intensive ten-week Swahili field studies ideal for both international and regional students
  •   Intensive ten-week Swahili studies courses for experienced NGO staff and partners
  •   Shorter courses on related themes, including a regular workshop; towards Swahili studies
  •   In-house training workshops tailored to the needs of individual organizations interested in Swahili studies
  •   Short/Long term stay with a Swahili family
  •   Regional programmes lasting a year or more to enhance conversational skills in Swahili
  •   Advice and consultancy on practical issues of Swahili studies
  •   Assistance with research on Swahili studies
  •   Assistance with Undergraduate, M.A and PhD supervision
  •   Know-Swahili Course
  •   Special tailored courses to meet your own needs

The Course 

RISS-EA (TUSIMA) training is designed as a single part-time/full-time course, consisting of seven modules and lasting ten weeks. We strongly encourage participants to do the full course, but in special circumstanceswe sometimes allow a participant one or more modules separately. A formal certificate will be issued to each partcipant who completes the full course or module.

The course fees is as follows payable to ‘National Museums of Kenya '.

INTERNATIONAL:

Students from all continents except Africa.

  • Living with a Swahili family
  • Hotel Accomodation

4. Medical Insurance-self(Mandatory)

  1. Administrative fees - $300 (Covers the above provisions)
  2. Tuitions fees - $700 (Covers the above provisions)
