2. MR. GUIDO AST PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION
Currently there is a photographic exhibition which is running at the Lamu Fort featuring Lamu in the 70s. The spectacular collections of photographs were donated by Mr. Guido Ast, who came to Lamu in the 70s as tourist and later worked in the town as a Architectural Consultant during the construction of Lamu market built through the support of GTZ.
In his collection, Mr. Ast captured architectural, cultural, religious, economic and social life of Lamu in the 1970's. The photographs numbering 91, has extensively captured the people, attire, dance, music instruments, jewellery, interior décor, cookery, architecture, carved doors, plaster designs, workshops, maritime activities, shops, the front facade of Lamu and many more….
For history lovers this collection will provide a distinctive look on social, economic and cultural life in the late 70s and rapid development that has taken place over period of 30 years. The photographs that were officially opened by the German Ambassador to Kenya Mr. Bernrd Brown in November of 2005 have apparently enlisted nostalgic memories on the golden days of Lamu.
